Aspect is not a fully grammaticalized category in Livonian. However, three different grammatical means of expressing aspect/aspectuality can be observed: differential object marking and adverbial particles (which is common among Finnic languages) as well as verbal prefixation by means of borrowed Latvian prefixes.
The study starts from the prefixed verbs: what kind of inner aspectual values they express compared with their non-prefixed counterparts, how the possible object cases (genitive and partitive) are combined with the prefixed verbs, and what kind of aspectual values can be observed in these combinations. Making the analysis more difficult a substantial amount of prefixed verbs appears in subordinate clauses, a fact that has to be treated with special consideration.

The study aims to describe the relations between differential object marking and prefixation: do they occur next to another in mere abundance or could they have developed particular functions?
